Beware of insurance loopholes for unlicensed transportation companies
The Taxicab, Limousine & Paratransit Association (TLPA), a global non-profit trade association that represents the private passenger transportation industry, has published a report entitled Dangerous Details in the Fine Print: How Uber, Lyft and Sidecar Are Shifting Risk and Avoiding Responsibility. This report highlights concerns over unlicensed transportation companies and how they’re attempting to avoid liability and regulations.
It raises questions about the lack of safety standards and regulations surrounding unlicensed transportation companies. The report argues that the dangers of transportation are intensified by the use of hailing apps for unlicensed cars for hire.
The report says that drivers and passengers are blindly accepting all of the risk and are unknowingly putting their lives and the lives of innocent pedestrians in danger because of insurance loopholes.
The report also lists the efforts unlicensed transportation companies have made to avoid responsibility in the event of an accident and also contains alarming fine-print excerpts and lopsided provisions hidden in the terms and conditions of ride-sharing companies such as Uber.
